Turbanteak askatu zituzten, lohadar luzeak
hautsi eta egur sorten antzera lotu, halako moldez,
non fardelak opari iritsi zirenean zegozkien etxeetara,
emakumeek, belaun orbaindu bat edo beso tatuatu bat
ezagutzean, konortea galdu baitzuten. Liburu
sakratuetako kantikak ero baten algararen hotsa zuen;
bere izenaren duin den edozein jainkok berehala
arbuiatuko zituzkeen kultu berrienaren zale
begi-lehor hauek. Ez zen bularrik utzi laztandu gabe,
ez alu heldurik aztertu gabe izua ziztu bizian
desbridatu zenean aldiri sedatuetan, erreginaren
hileta suan txingarrak hozten ari ziren bitartean.

The turbans were unwound, the long limbs / broken and bunched to seem like faggots / so that when such bundles were gifted / to their respective homes the women / swooned as their eyes alighted on a scarred / knee or a tattooed arm. The scriptural / chant sounded like a lunatic’s guffaw; / any God worth his name would hasten / to disown these dry-eyed adherents / of the newest cult. No breast was left / unfondled, no ripe cunt overlooked / as terror, fleet of foot, did rampage / the sedate suburbs, while in the queen’s / funeral pyre the embers lay cooling.
