12 OLD SARDINES FOR IMMEDIATE CONSUMPTION

A good book of poems should be

like a can of fish.

Fresh and nutritious, a source of phosforus and calcium.

Or a foul-smelling discharge

that sends us running in the other direction,

prisoners of our own panic,

A can of rooten fish and charred heads

with sharp teeth and eyes.

One of two.

And that,

like a good book of poems,
